Is the author maybe just pretending to be the murderer? Review: Over the years I watched numerous movies and it is a huge advantage to just remember small stuff here and there. In this setting, Yu Irie manages to include a number of social comments as the role of the press, justice, public opinion and the way it is shaped, the concept of idols in the broader sense, and the role of the police. However, the movie barely succeeds doing so. The more closely framed action has a rougher fluidity, often underlining the roughness of the performed actions or the chaos of the situation. Toru Nakamura as Toshio Sendo is quite good, emitting the seriousness and professionalism his character demands. The movie didn't seem to consider things all that much.
The perverse pleasure that the media and the public derives from Sonezaki, as the one who went beyond the law, is very sensibly brought to the fore in the narrative and becomes even slightly disturbing for the spectator. The plot unfolds in flashbacks and of course, at some point, you have to ask yourself whether Sonezaki is really the murderer or just somebody who wants to exploit the fame to sell his book. Even if that leaves some subtle suspense, the plot lacks the flair of the original's roller coaster ride. As the statute of limitation period has lapsed, he does not have to fear any sort of legal prosecution. The placing of the cuts frequently aims to give the narrative space its continuous character — or, in the case of flashbacks, consistency at the level of the character. Cameras flash as the killer holds up his book with a daring, charismatic smile. That his role stays in the dark for the most part is understandable, as the necessary mystery around him needs to be kept alive. Furthermore, his performance is seconded by the performances of Hideaki Ito and the other members of the cast; each actor bringing enough soul and body to their respective characters. Evidently though, after a fashion, all of the above are set aside in favor of the story. As a result, the movie takes itself rather seriously, which can get a little problematic when it comes to all the twists.
In the beginning of 2017, I launched my own website, Asian Film Vault, which I merged in 2018 with Asian Movie Pulse, creating the most complete website about the Asian movie industry, as it deals with almost every country from East and South Asia, and definitely all genres. In the end, the thriller has a few problems because it takes itself too seriously and uses too many twists instead of fleshing out the thriller's motives, which could have made the remake stand its ground against the original. The film starts with a mysterious man announcing the publishing of the book that describes the crimes he committed 15 years ago, just after the stature of limitations expire. Makimura remains a shallow character and he sometimes even seems cold. Wataru Makimura Hideaki Ito was one of the investigators and almost managed to apprehend him but in the end the murderer managed to escape.
The realism of the scenes in the studio, both in front and behind the camera are among the highlights of his effort. The plot develops steadily so that the tension is kept up and the movie always moves forward despite of its slow pacing. The effect of domestic violence and relationships are touched upon. Shortly afterwards, the killings stopped. This limit is clearly exceeded here.
The editing in the film is one of its better assets, with the editor unfortunately I could not find his name doing a great job in connecting the various visual aspects in a fashion that is everything but confusing. It was so successful that Robot Communications decided to make a Japanese remake, with Yu Irie as director. The mysterious mood is kept throughout the film which was effective in engaging the audience.
Detective Makimura Hideaki Ito , who investigated the string of strangulations as his first murder case, feels powerless. The effect being that the rapid sequences of revelations appear almost unintentionally comical. At this point, it needs to be mentioned that the thriller doesn't stick out because of its direction, though. However, some flashbacks, which are supposed to remind us of important information given before and key scenes, do seem unnecessary. Soon his words and his image are everywhere in the media. Starting from my own blog in Greek, I then moved on to write for some of the major publications in Greece, and in a number of websites dealing with Asian cinema, such as Taste of Cinema, Hancinema, EasternKicks, Chinese Policy Institute, and of course, Asian Movie Pulse. So when a series of murders occurs near his town, Byung-su gets worried whether the killings are his doing during his memory lapses. . The statute of limitation law was abolished seven years ago but Sonezaki's murders still fall into this period, which makes it impossible for the police to arrest him.
